ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Crane (machine)

So imagine you have a really really big toy truck that you want to pick up some really big blocks with. But the blocks are too heavy for you to lift on your own! That's where a crane comes in.

A crane is kind of like a really big robot arm with a big hook on the end. It can pick up and move really heavy things, like blocks, cars, or even whole buildings!

There are different kinds of cranes, but one common type is the tower crane. It's really tall and it's usually used to build really big buildings. The crane has a big long arm called the jib, which can move up, down, and side to side. The hook is attached to the jib and it can move back and forth, too.

When the crane operator wants to pick something up, they use a remote control to move the jib and hook until the hook is right over the thing they want to pick up. Then they lower the hook and hook it onto the thing. Once it's hooked on, the crane lifts the thing up and moves it wherever it needs to go.

Crane operators are very skilled and they have to be very careful when they're operating the crane. It's important to make sure everything is safe and secure so nothing falls or breaks.

So that's what a crane is - it's like a big robot arm that can lift and move really heavy things!
