ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Crime mapping

Okay, imagine you have a coloring book with lots of pictures of houses, parks, and streets. Now, imagine that instead of coloring the pictures, you get to circle places where bad things have happened, like when someone's bike got stolen or when there was a fight.

But you don't just put a circle anywhere! You have to be very smart and figure out if there are certain parts of the pictures where bad things happen more often. For example, maybe there's a house where lots of stuff gets stolen, or a park where people get into fights.

Once you've circled all the bad things in the pictures, you can look at them all together and see where the most bad things happen. That's what crime mapping is! It's like making a special map that shows where the most bad things happen in a particular area.

And why does anyone care about this map? Well, the police and other people who help keep us safe can use it to figure out where to focus their attention so they can prevent more bad things from happening. Pretty cool, huh?
