ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Critical legal studies

Critical Legal Studies (CLS) is a way of thinking about the law that questions standards and rules that society usually follows. Instead of seeing the law as something that should be followed as-is, CLS looks deeper and questions why certain laws are the way they are, who makes and enforces them, and what kinds of effects they have on different groups of people. CLS asks if the law is really fair, or if the people in power are using the law to keep themselves in power and make sure that some people are more privileged than others. Basically, CLS looks at how the law affects everyone, and tries to make sure that everyone gets equal treatment under the law.
