Okay kiddo, imagine you're walking to school and you need to cross a really busy street. That's where a crossing guard comes in. A crossing guard's job is to make sure that you and other kids can cross the street safely with as little danger as possible.
They're like grown-ups who help you cross the street when you're walking with your mom or dad. But instead of just one person, crossing guards stay at crossings during the busiest times of day and help lots of kids cross the street.
When you get close to the crossing, the crossing guard will hold up a stop sign so that cars know to stop and let you cross. The crossing guard will also show you when it's safe to cross. That means they'll look both ways (kind of like you do when you're with your parents) to make sure no cars are coming.
If it's safe, the crossing guard will blow a whistle to let you know it's okay to start walking across the street. They'll keep blowing the whistle until all of the kids have made it across. Then they'll let the cars start going again.
So crossing guards help keep you and other kids safe when you're crossing a busy street. They're like superheroes, but instead of capes, they wear orange vests and stop signs.
