Density of water

Water is a type of liquid that is really important for life on Earth. It is made up of tiny things called molecules that always stick close together.

Now, when we talk about the density of water, what we mean is how heavy or light a certain amount of water is. This is because how close together those molecules are can change how much it weighs.

For example, let's pretend you have a bowl full of water. If you were to add some salt to the water, those salt molecules would spread out in between the water molecules. This means there would be more space between the water molecules now, so the water would be less dense, or lighter, than before.

On the other hand, if you were to squeeze a bunch of ice cubes into that same bowl of water, the ice cubes would push the water molecules even closer together. This means there would be less space between the water molecules, so the water would be more dense, or heavier, than before.

The density of water is really important because it affects how things float or sink in water. Things that are less dense than water will float on the surface, like a rubber duck. But things that are more dense than water will sink down to the bottom, like a rock.

So, remember that the density of water tells us how heavy or light a certain amount of water is, based on how close together those water molecules are.
