ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Dose–response relationship

Okay kiddo, so imagine you're eating sweets. You know that the more sweets you eat, the more your tummy will hurt, right? That's because there's a certain amount of sweets that your body can handle before it starts to feel bad.

Now, grown-ups have a similar concept when it comes to medicine or chemicals. We call it a dose-response relationship. Basically, it means that the amount of medicine or chemical you take can affect your body differently.

Let's say you have a headache and your mom gives you medicine. If you take just a little bit, it might not help your headache go away. But if you take too much, your body could feel really bad, just like when you eat too many sweets.

That's why doctors and scientists study dose-response relationships. They want to make sure that people are taking the right amount of medicine or chemicals and not too much. They want to find the sweet spot, where you take just enough to help you but not so much that it hurts you.
