Duplessis Orphans were children who lived in Quebec in Canada during the 1940s and 1950s. They were sent to live in Catholic-run mental institutions by the government, even though most of them did not have mental illnesses. They were taken away from their families and locked in the institution, where they were mistreated, given experimental treatments, and, in some cases, abused. Many of the children were permanently scarred by their experiences, which is why they are called the "Duplessis Orphans."
