An election is when people vote to choose someone to be in charge. Everyone gets to have a say in who they think should be in charge by voting. On election day, people who are old enough and have registered to vote go to a polling place, like a school or church. Once they are there, they are given a ballot, which is a piece of paper that lists the people who are running for the job. People get to pick who they think should be in charge by marking their choice on the ballot with a pencil. Then they put the ballot in a box. After everyone has voted, the boxes are opened and the votes are counted. The person with the most votes wins the election and gets to be in charge.
