ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fear of commitment

Okay, imagine you have a really cool toy that you love to play with. You really love this toy and you want to keep playing with it forever. But then, your mom or dad tells you that it's time to put the toy away and go to bed. You get sad because you don't want to stop playing with your toy, but you also know that you have to listen to your mom or dad because they're in charge.

In the same way, some grown-ups have a fear of commitment when it comes to things like relationships or jobs. They might really like spending time with someone or they might really enjoy their job, but the idea of committing to that one thing forever can make them feel scared or unsure. They might worry about missing out on other experiences or they might worry about making the wrong choice. Just like you might worry about not being able to play with your toy again tomorrow, some people worry about not being able to change their mind later if they commit to something now.

It's okay to feel scared or unsure sometimes, but it's also important to try and talk about those feelings with someone you trust, like your mom or dad. Grown-ups can talk to their friends or a therapist about their fear of commitment and work through those feelings so they can make the best choices for themselves.
