ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fewer vs. less

Okay kiddo, so sometimes we talk about things we can count, like how many apples we have, and sometimes we talk about things we can't count, like water.

When we talk about things we can count, we use "fewer" to say there is a smaller number of them. For example, if you have five toy cars and you give two to your friend, you now have "fewer" toy cars.

But when we talk about things we can't count, we use "less" to say there is a smaller amount of it. For example, if you spilled some water and there is now "less" water in the cup.

So remember, use "fewer" when talking about things we can count and "less" when talking about things we can't count. Easy peasy!
