Finite element method in structural mechanics

Okay kiddo, so when we build buildings and bridges, we need to make sure they are safe and strong, right? But we can't just guess how strong they are, we need some special tools to help us. One of these tools is called the "finite element method."

Think of it like building with Legos. We start with a big flat base, like a Lego board, and then we build up the structure one small piece at a time, like building a Lego tower. Each small piece is called an "element."

Now, we need to know how strong each piece is. We can't just guess, we need to test them. This is where the computer comes in. The computer does lots of calculations to figure out how strong each piece is, based on the materials we use and the shape of each piece.

Then, when we put all the pieces together to make the whole structure, the computer can tell us how strong it is overall. This way, we can make sure it is safe and won't fall down.

So, in summary, the finite element method is like building with Legos and testing each piece to make sure the whole structure is strong and safe. It's a special tool that helps engineers design and build buildings and bridges.
