Gender binary is the idea that there are only two distinct genders in the world, male and female, and you have to be one or the other. It’s kind of like sorting things into two groups -- you can put all the red things in one group and all the blue things in another group. But, with gender binary, it means dividing people based on whether they have a penis or a vagina.
But some people don't feel like they fit into just one of those categories. They might feel like they're both male and female, or neither male nor female, or something entirely different. That’s called being non-binary.
Sometimes people confuse gender binary with biological sex. Biological sex is based on the anatomy of your body - male, female or intersex. Gender, on the other hand, is a social construct that’s built based on customs, beliefs, and stereotypes in different cultures. It's all about how you feel about yourself and how you want others to see you.
