ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Graphemics

Graphemics is all about how we use letters and symbols to represent different sounds and words when we write. Think of it like drawing pictures with letters. You know how each letter looks different, right? Well, when we put different letters together in certain ways, we can make them stand for different sounds and words.

For example, when you see the letters "cat" written out, you say it in your head as "kat," right? That's because the letter "C" represents the sound "K" and the letter "A" represents the sound "Ae" and the letter "T" represents the sound "Tuh".

But it's not just individual letters that we use to make words. We also use different symbols, like dots and lines, to represent sounds that don't have a letter. For example, in the word "phone," you don't see a letter for the "f" sound, right? Instead, we use the letter "ph" together to make that sound.

Graphemics can be really complicated, but it's what allows us to write down our thoughts and ideas and to communicate with each other even if we're not in the same place. So, next time you write something, remember that you're using graphemics to create a message that someone else can read and understand!
