ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ground effect vehicle

A ground-effect vehicle is like a special flying car that stays close to the ground instead of flying high in the sky. It looks like a plane but is designed to fly close to the ground, just above the water, or over any flat surface.

When a plane flies high in the sky, the air is less dense and the plane needs a lot of power to stay up. But when a ground-effect vehicle flies close to the ground, it creates a cushion of air between the surface and the vehicle. The air is more dense near the ground and the cushion helps the vehicle to float and be more stable.

To understand how it works, imagine blowing a big bubble with a straw in a cup of water. The bubble is like the cushion of air the vehicle creates. The vehicle hovers over this cushion of air and reduces the drag or resistance, making it easier and more efficient to fly.

Ground-effect vehicles are used for a variety of purposes such as military, search and rescue, and transportation, and they are specially designed to take advantage of this cushion of air to move quickly and efficiently over flat surfaces or water.
