ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Historical criticism

Historical criticism is a way of looking at stories, texts, and other things from the past to find out what really happened or why certain things happened the way they did. By examining the context and background of a story or text, we can learn a lot about why it was written the way it was and how it was interpreted by people at the time it was written. For example, if you read a story from the 1700s about George Washington, you can use historical criticism to learn about the events happening at that exact moment in the past. You can learn what people in the 1700s thought about George Washington and why they wrote the story the way they did.
