Wales is a country in the United Kingdom. It's part of Great Britain, which also includes England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Wales has a very long and interesting history that began thousands of years ago. Around 4000 BC, people started to live in what is now Wales. These early people were hunter-gatherers and lived in small villages.
Around 800 BC, a new group of people came to Wales. They were called the Celts and they spoke a language called Welsh. The Celts left behind lots of evidence of their culture and beliefs. They made artwork and created hill-forts, which are large walls built out of earth and stones, around their homes.
In the 11th century AD, the Normans invaded Wales. They brought their own language and culture to the country and built large castles to show their power. Soon, the Normans had taken control of most of Wales, though some parts of the country stayed independent.
Wales is now a part of the United Kingdom, and the language and culture of Wales is much different from the rest of Great Britain. Welsh is still spoken by many people in Wales, and Welsh traditions and festivals, like St. David's Day, are celebrated all over the country. So Wales has a long and interesting history that can still be seen today.
