Honne and tatemae

Honne and tatemae are two Japanese terms that describe different kinds of behaviors. Honne is when someone expresses their true feelings and desires. Tatemae is when someone pretends to have a different type of behavior. For example, a person who has honne might say what they honestly feel, even if it is not very polite. A person who has tatemae might pretend to be nicer than they actually feel.
