ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis

So, you know how your body is made up of different parts, right? Well, one important part is called the hypothalamus. It’s like the boss of a really important team of hormones in your body. This team is called the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis.

The pituitary gland is like the middleman in charge of sending messages to other glands in your body. One of these glands is called the gonads. Depending on whether you’re a boy or a girl, the gonads are either your testes or ovaries.

When you’re a baby, your HPG axis is pretty quiet. But as you get older, it starts to wake up and start doing some very important things. For one, it helps with puberty! That’s when your body starts changing and you grow taller, your voice changes, and lots of other stuff happens.

The HPG team is in charge of sending out chemicals called hormones. And these hormones do different things depending on what part of the team is sending them. The hypothalamus sends one kind of hormone, the pituitary gland sends another, and the gonads send a third kind.

When the hypothalamus sends out its hormone, it tells the pituitary gland to send out its own hormone. The pituitary gland then sends that hormone to the gonads, which triggers them to start doing their own thing. For boys, the testes start making testosterone. For girls, the ovaries start making estrogen and progesterone.

All of these hormones together help your body develop and get ready for adulthood. They affect your body in lots of ways, from your growth to your mood to your sex drive. So even though you can’t see it happening, your HPG axis is really important and is always working hard to keep you healthy and growing!
