Immunosuppression

Immunosuppression is when our immune (pronounced “ih-myoon”) system gets turned off, or slowed down. Our immune system helps our body fight off germs like viruses and bacteria. Sometimes, when people have a special kind of illness, it can make their immune system work too hard or attack their own body. But, there are medicines that doctors can give to help slow down the immune system, so it doesn’t fight so hard. This helps people feel better and can even stop their own body from attacking itself. However, it also means that the body may be less able to fight off other germs like colds or the flu. That is why it’s important to stay away from sick people and wash hands often when taking immunosuppressive medicine.
