Indian Act

The Indian Act is a set of rules that the Canadian government made a long time ago for how Indigenous people should be treated. It's like a big book of rules for how to be fair to Indigenous people and how they can get help from the government.

But sometimes, the rules in the Indian Act weren't very fair. For example, the government used to make Indigenous people go to special schools where they weren't allowed to speak their own language or practice their own culture. This was very unfair and made a lot of Indigenous people very sad.

Nowadays, people are trying to change some of the rules in the Indian Act so that Indigenous people can have more say in what happens to them and their communities. We want to make sure that everyone is treated fairly and with respect!
