Numbered Treaties

Okay, let's pretend that we are sharing some candy between two friends, but we want to make sure that everything is fair and everyone gets what they deserve. To make things easier, we write down some rules called a "treaty."

Imagine that we want to share our candy with more friends, who live in different houses. We want to make a treaty with them too, but things are a bit more complicated. We don't want any fights to happen, so we need to make sure that everyone understands the rules very well.

This is where the "Numbered Treaties" come into play. They were a series of treaties signed between Indigenous peoples (First Nations) in Canada and the Canadian government. These treaties were called "Numbered Treaties" because they were identified by numbers, from 1 to 11, representing different parts of Canada.

Each treaty had a different purpose, but the main idea was to make agreements about sharing the land and its resources. The Indigenous peoples gave up some of their land, but in return, they received promises of certain benefits, such as hunting and fishing rights, healthcare, education, and money.

The treaties were like a big promise between the government and the Indigenous peoples. Both sides agreed to follow the rules, and everyone would benefit from this agreement. The treaties were signed over 100 years ago, but they still have an impact today, as they continue to shape the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the government.

So, the Numbered Treaties were basically agreements between the Indigenous peoples and the Canadian government, like making rules when sharing candy, but on a much bigger scale.
