ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Intermittent reinforcement

Okay kiddo, have you ever played a game where you got a prize for doing something really well? Like if you got all the answers right on a test, you got a sticker or a treat? Well, that's called reinforcement. It's when someone gives you something good because you did something good.

Now, imagine if every time you did something okay, like get some answers wrong on a test, you still got a prize sometimes. Maybe not every time, but sometimes. That's called intermittent reinforcement.

So, basically, it means that sometimes you get a good thing even if you didn't do something good. This can be confusing because you might start to think that even if you don't do well, you might still get a prize sometimes. It can make you want to keep trying even if you're not doing well, because you think there's still a chance you might get a prize.

But, intermittent reinforcement can also be dangerous. For example, imagine if someone keeps giving you candy even when you're not hungry. You might keep eating it just because it's there, even if it's not good for you. The same can happen with other things, like playing video games or using social media. It can be hard to stop even if it's not good for you.

So, it's important to remember that even if you get a prize sometimes, it doesn't mean you should keep doing something that isn't good for you. The best rewards come from doing something you're proud of, not just from getting an occasional prize.
