ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ionization energy

Ionization energy is a measure of how much energy it takes to pull apart (or "ionize") a molecule into separate pieces. It takes energy to do this because the pieces that make up the molecule have a natural attraction to each other—it's like trying to pull apart two magnets stuck together. When we measure ionization energy, we are measuring the amount of energy it takes to break those forces apart so the molecules can become separate pieces.
