ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Iqamah

Okay kiddo, you know how when we go to the mosque to pray, there's a call that goes out loud to tell everyone it's time to start praying? Well, that call is called Adhan.

Now, after Adhan, there's another call that is done by the people who lead the prayer, and it's called iqamah. It's like the really important reminder that tells us that we need to stand up, straighten our clothes and get ready to start praying.

Iqamah has some special words that go like this: "Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulu Allah. Hayya 'ala-s-salah, Hayya 'ala-l-falah. Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. La ilaha illa Allah."

And when you hear those words, it's important to follow along and get ready to focus on our prayers. That's what iqamah is all about, a special call that reminds us that we're about to talk to God and we need to make sure we are pure and ready to do so.
