ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Keyboard (computing)

A keyboard is like a big toy with lots of buttons on it that you use to talk to your computer. Each button on the keyboard is like a different letter, number or symbol. When you press one of these buttons, it sends a little message to the computer telling it which button you pressed. Then, the computer takes that message and turns it into words, numbers or actions that you want it to do.

Some keys on the keyboard do special things too, like the space bar, which makes a big blank space so you can move to the next line, or the backspace key, which helps you erase mistakes you made. There are also keys that help you do things like copy and paste things that you have typed before, or make the letters bigger or smaller.

Some keyboards can have special features like lights or different colors, but they all do the same basic thing: help you talk to your computer by pressing the right buttons.
