ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kilowatt-hour

A kilowatt-hour is like a measurement of how much energy you use in your house, kind of like how you measure how much water you use by looking at the meter outside your house.

You know how your parents turn on lights in your house, watch TV or use the washing machine? Well, all these things use a type of energy called electricity.

Think of electricity like a bunch of tiny workers that push and pull electricity through wires to bring it to your house. The harder the workers have to work to bring the electricity to your house, the more energy you use.

A kilowatt-hour is just a way to measure how much work those tiny workers did to give you electricity. It's like counting how many cookies you eat, but instead, you're counting how much energy you use in your house.

So, say you turn on a light in your room and keep it on for an hour. That light uses a little bit of energy to stay on. If you keep it on for a whole hour, it uses one kilowatt-hour (kWh) of energy!

And all the other things in your house that use electricity, like your TV and your video game console, they also use energy. So, you can add up all the energy you use in your house over time to know how much energy you used in a day, a week, or even a month.

That's what a kilowatt-hour is, basically. It's just a way to measure how much energy you use in your house, so you can use it wisely and not waste it!
