Lawrence v. Texas

Lawrence v. Texas was a legal case that happened a long time ago, when two people named John Lawrence and Tyron Garner were arrested by the police in Texas because they were engaging in a private sexual activity together. At that time, Texas had a law that made it illegal for two people of the same gender to engage in sexual activity, even privately.

However, John and Tyron did not think that this law was fair, and so they decided to fight back. They went to court and argued that this law violated their constitutional rights, which means it went against some important rules that the government has to follow to protect people's rights and freedoms.

So, the case went all the way up to the Supreme Court of the United States, which is the highest court in the land. The Supreme Court listened to the arguments from both sides and eventually ruled in favor of John and Tyron, saying that the Texas law was unconstitutional.

What this means is that the Supreme Court decided that everyone has the right to engage in private sexual activity, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation. They also said that the government does not have the power to discriminate against people because of their sexual preferences.

This ruling was a big deal because it helped to open up more rights and protections for people who identify as LGBT. It also set a precedent that has been used in many other cases since then to help fight against discrimination based on sexual orientation.
