Leper colony

Alright kiddo, a leper colony is a special place where people who have a rare disease called leprosy are sent to live. Leprosy is a sickness that can make a person's skin and nerves not work properly, and it can also make them lose their fingers, toes, and even their nose if it's not treated correctly.

So, a long time ago, when people didn't know how to treat leprosy very well, they were afraid that the sick people could spread the disease to others. That's why they made colonies, places where sick people could live together without infecting healthy people.

In these colonies, doctors and health workers would take care of the sick people, give them medicine to help them feel better, and teach them how to be clean and healthy. They also made sure that sick people had enough food, water, and a safe place to live.

Today, we have much better treatments for leprosy, and people with the sickness can live with their families and friends, go to school and work, and do anything else everyone else can do too. Leprosy is no longer a reason to separate people from the rest of society!
