ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Levee

Imagine you're playing in the sand and you make a little wall to keep the water from the ocean out. A levee is kind of like that, but on a much larger scale. It's a big wall or mound of dirt that people build along rivers or other bodies of water to keep them from flooding nearby areas.

When it rains really hard or a lot of snow melts, sometimes rivers can rise up and spill over onto land. That's when levees come in handy! They help keep the water where it's supposed to be, like a big shield.

Sometimes people also build levees around areas where they live or work, to protect them from floodwaters. And sometimes, if there's already been a flood, people will build a levee to help prevent another one in the future.

So really, a levee is just a big barrier that helps keep water where it belongs!
