ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lifeboat ethics

Imagine you and your friends are on a big boat that's sailing in the ocean. Suddenly, the boat starts sinking, and there aren't enough lifeboats for everyone on board.

You and your friends can see people in the water, struggling to swim and stay alive. The captain tells you that you have to decide who gets to go on the lifeboats and who has to stay behind.

This is what lifeboat ethics is: the idea that there are limited resources and that we have to decide who gets them in a fair and just way when there are more people than resources can provide.

In this situation, you have to think about who should go on the lifeboats. Should it be the people who are the strongest and most capable of surviving on their own? Or should it be the people who are the most vulnerable and in the most immediate danger?

It's a difficult decision to make, but it's important to think about because it can have life or death consequences for the people involved.
