Lightness is a measurement of how bright something appears - from dark (black) to light (white). When something is darker, it looks like there is less light, and when it is lighter, it looks like there is more light. To measure lightness, scientists use something called a 'light meter.' A light meter measures the amount of light that is reflected off a surface, and tells us how bright or dark that surface is. The higher the number is, the lighter (more bright) it is.
