ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Major (academic)

A major in academics is like a special type of learning that you choose when you go to college or university. It's like deciding what you want to be when you grow up, but for now you get to learn all about it.

Think of it like a big menu of choices, where you can pick the main dish you want to try. Some people might choose to learn about science, while others might decide to learn about art or history or business.

Once you pick your major, you take lots of classes that focus on that subject. It's like eating a big meal, where each dish is specially prepared to teach you something new about your chosen subject.

As you eat (or learn), you get to know more and more about that subject until you become an expert in that field. And when you finish college, you can use what you learned in your major to decide what kind of job you want to have, or what else you want to study in the future.
