ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mark (money)

Mark is a type of money that was used in Germany before it was replaced with the euro in 2002. Just like how we use dollars and cents here in America, Germans used marks to buy things like toys or candy. The marks came in different sizes and colors, so people could easily tell them apart.

The value of a mark changed over time, based on how much people wanted it and how many marks were available. For example, if lots of people wanted marks because they believed they were valuable, the value of a mark would go up. But if there were too many marks in circulation, their value would go down.

So, people who had marks needed to pay attention to how much they could buy with them. Just like you might only have a dollar or two in your piggy bank, people in Germany would have to save up their marks to buy bigger things, like a bike or a new pair of shoes.
