ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

McGurk effect

The McGurk effect is when what you see can change what you hear. It happens when someone says a sound but your brain thinks it hears a different sound because of what your eyes are seeing.

For example, if you close your eyes and someone says "ba ba ba," that's what you'll hear. But if you open your eyes and see them saying "ga ga ga," your brain will mix the two up and you'll hear "da da da." It's because your brain tries to mix what it's seeing with what it's hearing to make sense of it all.

This effect can happen a lot in real life, especially in noisy places with lots of other sounds and distractions. It's a cool way that our brains try to make sense of the world around us!
