ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mental health counseling

Imagine you have a toy box full of different toys. Each toy is a different feeling or emotion you might have, like anger, sadness, happiness, or fear. Sometimes, you might feel like you don’t know what to do with your toys or you’re not sure how to play with them. That’s where a mental health counselor comes in.

A mental health counselor is kind of like a helper who can help you figure out how to play with your toys. They can help you understand what kinds of toys you have and what they mean. They might also help you figure out how to sort through your toys and organize them in a way that makes sense to you.

Sometimes, when you have too many toys or they’re all mixed up, it can be overwhelming or scary. A mental health counselor can help you feel safe and comfortable as you sort through your toys. They can also help you learn how to communicate your feelings and needs to other people.

Just like a grown-up might go to a doctor when they’re sick, sometimes people go to a mental health counselor when they’re feeling overwhelmed, sad, angry, or scared. Talking to a mental health counselor can help you feel better and more confident in handling your feelings in the future.
