ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Metaphony

Metaphony is like when you play with sounds and change some of them to make words sound different.

Imagine you have two words like "day" and "say". If you notice, they both have the same vowel sound: "a". But, in "say", there's a letter "y" after the "a" that changes the way you say the word.

Metaphony is when you change the way a word sounds by adding another letter to it, like how "say" sounds different than "day" because of the "y" letter. This usually happens in languages like Italian or Spanish where one vowel can change the whole meaning of a word depending on which other letters are around it.

So, metaphony is like playing with sounds to create different words and meanings.
