ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Modus tollens

Modus tollens is a way of reasoning. It usually starts with a general statement, which is called the "if-then statement". For example, "If it is raining, then the ground is wet." Next, we look at a situation and come up with a specific statement. For example, "The ground is not wet." From this, modus tollens allows us to figure out the opposite of the if-then statement. In this example, the opposite is "It is not raining." Basically, modus tollens helps us figure out the opposite of an if-then statement from a specific situation.
