ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Moon type

The moon type refers to the physical characteristics of the moon. Just like how people have different hair colors or eye shapes, the moon has different types based on its features. There are three main types of moons: rocky moons, icy moons, and a mix of both.

Rocky moons are made out of solid rock, just like the ground we walk on. They have a rough and bumpy surface, full of craters and mountains. The moon that orbits around our Earth is a rocky moon.

Icy moons, on the other hand, are made up of ice and other frozen materials. These moons are usually found in the outer solar system, where the temperatures are very cold. They have smooth and round surfaces, and look like giant snowballs.

Then, there are moons that are a mix of both rock and ice. These moons usually have a rocky core, but also have frozen materials on their surface or in their atmosphere.

So, the type of moon depends on what it's made out of and how it looks on the outside. Scientists study these moons to learn more about our solar system and how it formed.
