Newspeak is a term used to describe language that is designed to control thought and limit freedom of expression. It is named after the official language in the novel 1984 by George Orwell. Newspeak involves using words that are very limited, to make sure that people are not able to think or express certain ideas. For example, the words "freedom" and "democracy" might be replaced with "obedience" and "control" to make sure people are not able to talk about those concepts. Furthermore, words that might describe emotion or feelings might be replaced with other words such as "joycentness" instead of "happiness". The idea behind Newspeak is that if you can control language, you can also control people's thinking.
