ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nilavilakku

Nilavilakku is a special type of lamp that is used in Hindu temples and households in India. It is made of brass or bronze and looks like a small bowl or cup. The cup or bowl has a base and a stem that holds a little container or reservoir to hold the oil. The Nilavilakku is filled with oil which can be coconut oil, mustard oil, sesame oil, or ghee. The oil is then lit using a wick made of cotton.

The lamp is usually placed on a decorative stand to make it easy to hold and move around. It is a symbol of light and prosperity. People light the lamp during special occasions like festivals, weddings, and other ceremonies. It is also lit every day in many Hindu homes as a form of prayer and devotion.

When we light the Nilavilakku, it represents the presence of God or divinity and the light represents knowledge, wisdom, and peace. Along with the oil, we add some spices, flowers, or sandalwood paste, which gives a pleasant scent and makes it more aromatic.

This light is believed to bring positive energy, harmony, and peace to the house. It reminds us of the need to spread love and peace throughout the world. So, whenever you see a Nilavilakku, remember that it symbolizes the light of God and the hope for a bright future filled with happiness and prosperity.
