Nuclear winter

Nuclear winter is a frightening situation that could happen if a nuclear war were to break out. Nuclear weapons are so powerful that when they are detonated in cities, huge firestorms and thick smoke can cover entire continents. This smoke blocks the sun's light and warmth from reaching the Earth and causes the temperature to drop. This temperature drop is called nuclear winter because it is like winter, except it is caused by nuclear weapons instead of the natural season change.
