ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Objectivity (journalism)

Objectivity in journalism means being fair and unbiased in reporting news.

Imagine you and your friends are playing a game of tag. If you were chosen to be the "referee" of the game, it would be important for you to be fair and make sure everyone follows the rules. This is similar to being a journalist, who has the important job of telling others what is happening in the world around them.

Being objective means not taking sides and reporting the facts as they are. This means not letting your personal feelings or opinions influence what you write. It also means not leaving out important information that might change the way people understand a story.

For example, if you were writing a story about a new toy that came out, you would want to include information about the toy's price and other details that might be important to someone who wants to buy it. You would try to find out as much information as possible and present it in a clear and straightforward way.

Being objective is important because people rely on journalists to give them accurate information. If a journalist is not objective, they might leave out information that is important, or they might only report on one side of a story. This can lead to misunderstandings and even create more problems instead of helping to solve them.

So, just like being a fair and unbiased referee in a game of tag is important, being an objective journalist is important too!
