ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Octoroon

An octoroon is a word that was used in the past to describe someone who had 1/8th Black ancestry, which means that one of their great-grandparents was Black. Imagine that you have eight colored marbles, and one of them is black. If you had an octoroon grandmother, that would mean one of the marbles in your family tree is black.

The word "octoroon" is not used much anymore because it is not a nice way to describe people based on their ancestry. Everyone deserves to be respected no matter what their background is. It's important to treat people kindly and fairly no matter who they are or where they come from.
