Morisco

Morisco is a word that was used a long time ago in Spain to describe people who were Muslims but who had converted to Christianity. Imagine if you were a Muslim but then you decided to become a Christian, people might call you a Morisco.

It was a complicated time in Spain because some people were worried that Moriscos weren't truly Christian and might try to secretly practice Islam again. Other people were worried that Moriscos might secretly help Muslims invade Spain again. It was a big disagreement and some people thought that all Moriscos should be kicked out of Spain, while others thought they should be allowed to stay.

Eventually, the word Morisco stopped being used because the government decided that all Muslims who had converted to Christianity were now just considered regular Christians, and they didn't need a separate name or classification.
