ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Origins of language

Long, long ago, when humans were just starting to live together in groups, they needed a way to communicate with each other. They started making noises and eventually created words that meant things. They used these words to talk about what they needed, like food, water, or shelter. They also used these words to talk to each other about things they wanted, like where to go or what to do.

As they talked more and more, they realized that they needed more words to describe things that were harder to understand. They needed words for emotions, like happy, sad, or angry, and for how things looked, like colors or shapes. They also needed words for things they couldn't see, like ideas or beliefs.

Over time, different groups of people started to develop their own languages because they lived in different places and had different cultures. These languages evolved and changed as people discovered new things and had new experiences.

Today, there are thousands of different languages spoken all over the world, and they all have their own unique sounds, grammar, and vocabulary. And scientists are still trying to understand how language actually started and how it continues to change and evolve even today.
