ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Oscar season

Imagine you love to draw pictures really well. You have lots of friends who also love to draw, and you all like to show off your best work.

Now imagine that there is a special day every year where all the best artists in the world get together and show off their absolute best pictures. The judges look at all the pictures and decide which ones are the best of the best.

That special day is like "Oscar season" for movies.

Movies are like really long pictures that tell a story. Every year, lots of people make lots of movies. Some are really good, some are just okay, and some are not very good at all.

During "Oscar season," which is usually from December to February, all the best movies of the year are shown in theaters and on TV. People all over the world watch these movies and talk about which ones they liked the most.

Then there is a really big award ceremony called the Oscars. Just like the judges for the art pictures, there are judges for the movies. They watch all the best movies from that year and decide which ones are the best of the best.

The movies that win Oscars are considered the best movies of the year, just like the best artist picture is considered the best picture of the year. People get really excited and happy when their favorite movies win. And even if a movie doesn't win an Oscar, it's still really special to be nominated because it means it was one of the best movies of the year.

So, "Oscar season" is a special time when we celebrate all the best movies of the year and see which ones the judges think are the absolute best. It's like a big party for movie lovers!
