ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pickup rider

So imagine you are playing with toy cars and one of them is driving around on a track. If you want to move that toy car onto another track that doesn't connect, you need to pick up the car and move it over to the new track.

A pickup rider is kind of like that. They ride on a horse alongside a racehorse that needs to be moved to a new place, like from the stable to the track where it will race. The pickup rider is there to help the racehorse move smoothly and safely. They might hold on to the horse's reins or lead it by a rope to guide it where it needs to go.

Sometimes, during a race, a rider might fall off their horse or their horse might get hurt. The pickup rider is also there to help those riders and horses get off the track safely. They might have to ride close to the horse and grab onto its bridle to stop it, so the rider can get off without getting hurt.

So, a pickup rider is like a helper for horses. They make sure the horses go where they need to go and they help keep the horses and riders safe.
