Platitude

A platitude is a saying or expression that is used a lot and is usually meant to make people feel better, but it often isn't very meaningful. For example, if your friend was feeling sad, you might tell them "It'll all work out in the end" - this is a platitude. It sounds nice, but it doesn't actually tell your friend anything useful or give them any new ideas.
