ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Populism

Populism is when people who are not part of the government, usually ordinary people, take a lot of power and influence in their country. It usually happens when people are upset with their leaders and want to make changes, so they rally together and vote on important issues. A leader that works in this way is called a populist leader, and they often use emotional language, like talk of "the people" or "the nation", instead of facts and evidence, to appeal to people. This type of leader is often found at the head of a political party, and they will often make big promises but not always follow through on them.
