Post hoc ergo propter hoc

Post hoc ergo propter hoc means "after this, therefore because of this". This is an idea that if one thing (A) happened after another thing (B), then B must have caused A. This idea means that if you see two things happening but you can't prove that one caused the other, then you may be wrong in assuming that one caused the other.
